I Had Prostate Cancer, So I Sought Treatment

By admin | January 16, 2010

Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in men over forty years old. The cause is still to be determined. Signs of prostate cancer include frequent urination, difficulty with voiding, and retention of urination. Diagnosis of prostate cancer is determined with the use of a rectal examination and testing of the blood. A biopsy will prove that the prostate cancer is present. Here are some prostate treatment that may be tried:

Estrogen Therapy

One prostate cancer treatment includes estrogen therapy. One-hundred percent of prostate cells are stimulated by testosterone. A few types of prostate cancer cells specifically need large doses of this hormone. By largely reducing testosterone, hormonal therapy can slightly eliminate the growth of prostate cancer cells.

Prostate Surgery

Another prostate treatment includes prostate surgery. If the cancer is confined to the prostate, the rate of cure is about eighty percent.

Radiation

Before one opts for prostate surgery, another prostate treatment could include radiation therapy. Radiation includes the utilization of high-powered x-rays, placement of radioactive materials within the body, or injections of radioactive substances into the bloodstream. This prostate cancer treatment relieves pain and other symptoms.

Chemotherapy

A final prostate treatment is chemotherapy, which works within the body to eliminate cancer cells that have spread from the prostate gland to other parts of the body. This drug treatment literally destroys all cancer cells.
